Public opinion sought for dog ordinance
The DeWitt Township board is looking into changing an ordinance that restricts dogs in most local parks, but it is seeking public input first.
The township is one of five municipalities among 40 that restricts dogs in its main parks, according to a recent township-conducted survey.
Unless there is a wave of complaints about the change, the board may lift restrictions on dogs at the township's 76-acre Granger Meadows Park, its nearby 25-acre Valley Farms Park and several smaller parks and play lots.
Township residents who would like to see a change in this ordinance or believe the existing rule is fine, are being asked to contact the clerk's office at 668-0270, or visit the township's Web site at www.dewitttownship.org/web/news.htm.
Under current policies, dogs are only allowed on 4,500 feet of mulch pathways in both the Granger Meadows Park and the Valley Farms Park.
The two parks, used by thousands of people, also have baseball diamonds, picnic areas, children's play areas, multi-purpose areas, basketball courts, an in-line skating rink and sand volleyball areas.
